Description

Sports Illustrated is looking for an experienced editor/writer to conceive, assign, edit and occasionally write print and digital projects for both SI Kids and Sports Illustrated. This is a hybrid role: You’ll spend approximately 70% of your time on the SI Kids bimonthly magazine and SIKids.com, and the balance editing features for Sports Illustrated’s flagship monthly magazine and SI.com.

Candidates will pitch and execute magazine stories that are relevant, entertaining, and informative for kids. A deep understanding of sports history, paired with up-to-date knowledge of current trends is a must, as is the ability to fashion stories that blend sports news with pop culture, connect sports history to the sports present, and provide kids a captivating respite from screens and homework. Candidates should also have experience and sharp instincts for assigning and editing a range of features, from profiles to trend stories to more complex narratives. Candidates should be engaged and present in meetings, willing to pitch concepts, iterate on others’ concepts, and work in a collaborative spirit to meet deadlines, comfortably working on multiple timelines, and be able to develop stories for tomorrow, next week, and next year. This role reports into the Managing Editor, SI Kids and the Editor in Chief, Sports Illustrated.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assign and edit print feature stories, digital longform features, cross-platform themed franchises and more
  • Lead story conception, including developing pitches from the staff, freelancers and yourself
  • Guide stories through the editing process from conception to publish, working with design, photo, copy, social media and digital production teams
  • Write features and other short-form content for SI Kids as needed
  • Contribute to editorial ideas meetings
  • Top edit stories as needed

Requirements

What You Have:

  • 7+ years of feature editing experience, ideally including experience editing and producing kid-focused content
  • Strong sports knowledge, with a passion for telling unique stories that go much deeper than scores, stats, trivia and the ups and downs of the daily news cycle
  • Ability to work well under pressure and adhere to tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with InCopy a plus
  • Connections to a network of freelance writers a plus
  • Attention to detail and a strong work ethic
  • A proactive approach to developing and promoting fresh ideas that will differentiate SI Kids and Sports Illustrated in the crowded sports media landscape

The expected salary range for this position is between $80,000-$95,000 annually. Actual pay will be determined based on skills, experience, and location. The benefits available for this position include flexible vacation policy, 15 paid holidays, paid parental leave, health insurance, 401(k) with company match.
