Description

Sports Illustrated is seeking an experienced Staff Writer to cover college football and basketball across platforms (digital, video, social, print). You should have deep knowledge of the NCAA and a wide-reaching network within college football and basketball. The SI audience demands premium storytelling and authoritative reporting and applicants should be able to produce compelling work with breadth and depth, and create engaging multimedia content that reaches fans wherever they are. The ability to collaborate across teams is essential and candidates must be willing to work flexible hours based on seasonality including nights, weekends, and holidays.

What You'll Do:

You will create various pieces of content with an unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism. We will look to you as a master of social media, both as a news gathering tool and a way to build your brand.

  • Report and write quick-twitch pieces on trending topics that fans care about
  • Follow breaking news with insightful analysis that explains a story’s significance and its ramifications through text, video and audio content
  • Develop enterprise and trend stories that advance the news and set the agenda
  • Be an idea machine, constantly on the lookout for buzzy stories and the most audience-friendly angle to take on them
  • Craft compelling rankings, lists and debate topics that engage audiences on multiple platforms
  • Coordinate with college teams to plan for tentpole events

Where You’ll Be:

The expected salary range for this position is between $80,000 - $105,000 annually. Actual pay will be determined based on skills, experience, and location. The benefits available for this position include flexible vacation policy, 15 paid holidays, paid parental leave, health insurance, 401(k) with company match.

Requirements

What You Have

  • 6+ years of sports journalism experience, ideally covering college football and/or basketball for a major media organization
  • Deep knowledge of the NCAA and its inner workings
  • Strong news judgment and awareness of emerging trends
  • Functional and wide-ranging source network within college football and basketball
  • A master of social media, both as a news gathering tool and a way to build your brand
  • Fluency in the science of readership and engagement, including an understanding of how to use analytics to help determine which stories resonate with which audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and technologies, including content management systems, social media platforms and analytics tools
  • Excellent organizational, reporting, communication and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multimedia projects from concept to completion
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to take and give constructive criticism
  • Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays
