Legal Counsel, UK
Legal
London, UK
Flatpay is one of Europe's fastest-growing fintech companies and we've recently launched in the UK.
Role: Legal Counsel, UK
Location: 5 days a week, London, White City
Our first Legal Counsel hire for the UK entity: a sole-counsel role with broad scope, direct commercial impact, and a seat close to the decisions that matter.
Responsibilities
Act as the legal business partner for Commercial, People, Customer Support and Operations: give clear, fast, solution-oriented advice and assess the risk behind strategic decisions, product rollouts and employment law cases.
Own commercial contracting: draft and review partner and supplier agreements, terms and conditions, and build the templates and standards the business operates from.
Own UK employment law risk: advise on complex or high-risk cases, sensitive exits and consultation processes, instruct and manage external counsel on tribunal litigation, and give final sign-off on settlement agreements.
Stay ahead of regulation: monitor the Employment Rights Bill, gender pay gap reporting, TUPE on acquisitions and supplier changes, and translate each into operational guidance for a field sales business.
Drive data protection and compliance: apply UK GDPR and DPA 2018 in day-to-day operations, run risk assessments, build internal procedures and deliver employee training.
Manage relationships with external counsel: liaise with specialist advisers on complex matters and apply internal commercial rationale to the advice you receive.
Skills & Attributes
Pragmatic legal judgement: the ability to turn a legal analysis into a commercial answer a business team can act on.
Autonomy and self-direction: comfortable setting your own priorities, knowing when to escalate, and knowing when to instruct external counsel rather than solve it yourself.
Clear, direct communication: no memos that hedge, no jargon that obscures.
Adaptability: able to move across commercial, employment, data protection and corporate matters without losing pace.
Collaborative instinct: trusted by non-legal colleagues, not feared by them.

Broad technical grounding across commercial contracts, UK employment law and data protection.
Experience in a scale-up, fintech or tech environment is strongly preferred.
Exposure to the payments industry, financial services regulation or an FCA-regulated environment is a strong plus, though not a prerequisite.
